Chappell Roan has honored Brigitte Bardot following the recent passing of the renowned French actress at the age of 91. The announcement of Bardot’s death came from her foundation, which was established to advocate for animal rights.
In an Instagram Story posted on Sunday, December 28—coinciding with the announcement—Roan shared a striking photo of Bardot, accompanied by the message, “Rest in peace Ms. Bardot.”
Roan also reflected on Bardot’s influence, stating, “She was my inspiration for red wine supernova,” referencing her Billboard Hot 100 hit “Red Wine Supernova.”
In her track from The Rise & Fall of a Midwest Princess, the Missouri native sings, “She was a playboy, Brigitte Bardot / She showed me things I didn’t know / She did it right there out on the deck / Put her canine teeth in the side of my neck.”
Roan joins numerous fans mourning Bardot’s passing. The Brigitte Bardot Foundation released a statement on Sunday praising Bardot as “an exceptional woman who gave everything and gave up everything for a world more respectful of animals.” The foundation emphasized, “Her legacy lives on through the actions and struggles the Foundation continues with the same passion and the same fidelity to her ideals.”
Before becoming a prominent animal rights activist, Bardot left an indelible mark as an actress, singer, model, fashion icon, and sex symbol. Her 1956 film, And God Created Woman, achieved international acclaim, while her iconic duet “Bonnie and Clyde” with Serge Gainsbourg in 1968 endures as a classic. Modern stars, including Sabrina Carpenter and Olivia Rodrigo, have also drawn inspiration from her life and style, with Rodrigo referencing Bardot in her song “Lacy,” singing, “Dazzling starlet, Bardot reincarnate / Well, aren’t you the greatest thing to ever exist?”
However, Bardot’s legacy is complicated by her controversial political views and five convictions related to inciting racial hatred against Muslims in her home country, adding a complex layer to her public persona.
