Savannah Guthrie Steps Back from NBC Olympics Coverage Amid Ongoing Search for Her Mother
NBC Sports announced on Tuesday that Savannah Guthrie will be absent from its Winter Olympics coverage this week as authorities continue to investigate the recent disappearance of her mother, Nancy Guthrie. The co-host of the Today show was scheduled to co-anchor the Opening Ceremony in Milan on Friday.
“Savannah will not be joining us at the Olympics as she focuses on being with her family during this difficult time,” said an NBC Sports spokesperson. “Our hearts are with her and the entire Guthrie family as the search continues for their mother. We will share additional information about our Opening Ceremony coverage plans soon.”
Investigators are examining potential DNA evidence found at the Tucson home of Nancy Guthrie, focusing on what is now considered a crime scene. These samples are expected to provide clues in the likely abduction of the 84-year-old woman.
In an interview with Today, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos stated, “We took some samples that we hope will have a DNA profile that gives us some identification as to what we’re looking at.” The results of testing may take several days, as reported by the program.
The Los Angeles Times has indicated that sources within law enforcement reported the discovery of blood at the scene, although it remains unclear whose blood it is.
Authorities have largely confirmed that Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance involves abduction. Sheriff Nanos remarked, “I believe she was abducted. She didn’t walk from there. She didn’t go willingly. This is an 84-year-old lady who in the middle of the night, while she’s asleep, is taken from her home.”
Savannah Guthrie has been absent from Today, with Sheinelle Jones co-anchoring alongside Craig Melvin. The show provided an update on the investigation, clarifying that Nanos did not imply Nancy Guthrie was “literally taken from her bed,” but suggested she was “taken from the home against her will,” which could indicate possible kidnapping.
In a heartfelt message on Instagram, Savannah Guthrie expressed, “we believe in prayer. we believe in voices raised in unison, in love, in hope. we believe in goodness. we believe in humanity. above all, we believe in Him.”
