NEED TO KNOW
- Savannah Guthrie shared that her kids, Vale and Charley, are “so over” her “silent routine” after undergoing vocal surgery.
- The Today show star previously announced she would be taking some time away from the show due to nodules on her vocal cords and a polyp that required removal.
- More recently, Guthrie was able to ditch the whiteboards and reveal her post-vocal surgery voice on the morning talk show.
Savannah Guthrie’s children, Vale and Charley, have expressed their frustration with her recent vocal rest during her recovery from surgery for nodules and a polyp on her vocal cords. Guthrie made the announcement regarding her absence from Today on December 19, as she prepared for her recuperation.
In a candid social media post, Guthrie shared a photo of a whiteboard featuring a doodle of a woman frowning, accompanied by the message, “I can’t talk!” She captioned it, “Kids are so over the silent routine (And so am I).”
Guthrie also included a lighthearted image of her son Charley, 8, who was laughing while playfully scribbling over her earlier doodle, showcasing the family’s coping mechanism during her recovery.

Fortunately, just hours later, Guthrie made a triumphant return to communication, debuting her new voice during a video appearance on Today on January 20. She began a segment by initially writing on her whiteboard but quickly shifted to speaking, humorously stating, “You know what, I think it’d be easier for me to just talk!”
Despite still being on vocal rest, she revealed, “I’m allowed to talk for five to 10 minutes every hour,” prompting cheers from her co-hosts. “This is my new voice or my old voice, but my new voice,” she added.
Response from her colleagues varied, with Al Roker commenting that she “sounds the same,” while Craig Melvin remarked that she sounds “markedly better.” Guthrie is expected to fully return to the show on Monday, January 26.
“I think the good news is that it worked!” Guthrie stated. “It’s kind of a slow recovery. You’re allowed to talk and if you talk too much — which is a real risk for me — you start to feel it, so you just have to take it easy.”
As for her children, it appears her new voice is still an adjustment. In a recent Instagram video, Charley humorously commented that his mother sounded like a “good-sounding duck,” claiming her new voice is “not even close” to what it used to be.
