As filming wraps up for the final season of Outlander, uncertainty looms over the cast regarding the series’ conclusion. Actor Sam Heughan expressed that neither he nor his co-stars are completely certain how the time travel saga will conclude.
In a recent interview, conducted to promote his new book, The Cocktail Diaries, Heughan, aged 45, provided insights into what fans can expect in the upcoming season. Nearly a decade after its premiere in 2014, the beloved series is approaching its finale, yet Heughan admits that he is unsure of the fate awaiting his character, Jamie Fraser, and his on-screen wife, Claire, played by Caitríona Balfe.
“We don’t really know how it ends,” he stated. “We kind of know, but we shall see in the edit ourselves.”
Despite the uncertainty, Heughan hinted at key themes in season 8: “Reconciliation… war and eternity.”
He emphasized his hope that viewers will reflect on the series as an “amazing adventure” and possibly return to the beginning for another viewing of season 1.

Heughan expressed his desire that fans feel a sense of justice for the characters and the story. “It’s hard. How do you finish a show like that? Obviously, we didn’t finish the books. We had to finish our show, so it is a departure from the books in some ways, but for us, it was rewarding, and we wanted to finish it right.”
Based on Diana Gabaldon’s long-running book series that began in 1991, Outlander will present its own conclusion, differing from the yet-to-be-released final novel.
As the cast prepares to say farewell to their beloved characters, Heughan notes the significance of reflecting on their decade-long journey together. He included a special Appletini recipe in his cocktail book, which he made for the wrap party he hosted at his home in Scotland.

“They all like a tipple,” Heughan remarked of his co-stars. “It was a really nice moment to share with everyone that I have been working with — it was cast and crew that were there, and just to celebrate an amazing journey we’ve all been on for the past 11 years.”
The eighth season of Outlander is set to premiere on March 6 on Starz, with the first seven seasons currently available for streaming on the Starz platform and the first six seasons also accessible on Netflix.
