Ducks Take Commanding Lead Over Oilers with Overtime Victory
Ryan Poehling netted the game-winning goal 2:29 into overtime, leading the Anaheim Ducks to a thrilling 4-3 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Sunday night. This win pushes the Oilers to the brink of elimination in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, as the Ducks now hold a 3-1 series lead.
The Ducks displayed remarkable resilience, fighting back from an early two-goal deficit. Jeffrey Viel’s goal with 6:29 remaining in regulation tied the game, capping off the team’s rally. Poehling’s decisive shot, which slipped beneath Edmonton goalie Tristan Jarry, confirmed the victory after an extensive video review deemed the puck had crossed the goal line.
Game 5 is set for Tuesday night in Edmonton.
The Ducks’ offense showcased its depth, with Cutter Gauthier and Mikael Granlund contributing power-play goals in the second period. Lukas Dostal was formidable in net, stopping 24 shots while the Ducks amassed a total of 20 goals across four games against the defending Western Conference champions.
On the other hand, the Oilers saw Evan Bouchard score a tiebreaking goal early in the third period, while Jarry recorded 34 saves. Kasperi Kapanen and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins both found the net in the first period, providing an early lead for Edmonton.
Late in the game, the Oilers nearly secured the win when Dostal made a spectacular pad save to deny a breakaway opportunity for Connor McDavid, who has totaled one goal and two assists in the series.
