Meryl Streep Skips Met Gala 2026 to Celebrate ‘Devil Wears Prada 2’ Success
Meryl Streep to Skip 2026 Met Gala—Focuses on New Film Promotion
Meryl Streep has opted out of attending the highly anticipated 2026 Met Gala, which will showcase numerous Hollywood stars. This decision follows her extensive promotional tour for The Devil Wears Prada 2.
Streep’s representative confirmed the actress’s longstanding absence from the Met Gala in a statement to People. “Meryl has been invited to the Met Gala for many years but has never attended,” the spokesperson said. “While she appreciates Vogue, Anna Wintour, and her incredible imagination and stamina—it has never quite been her scene.”
The Met Gala, known as fashion’s biggest night, will take place at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where fans were eager to see how celebrities would interpret this year’s theme, “Costume Art,” along with the dress code of “Fashion is Art.”
Although Streep will not participate in this year’s event, she has appeared at several red carpet events leading up to the film’s premiere on May 1. In The Devil Wears Prada 2, Streep reprises her iconic role as Miranda Priestly, the formidable editor-in-chief of Runway magazine. The plot picks up years after the original film, showcasing Miranda’s continued reign in the fashion world.
Streep’s former assistant, Andrea, played by Anne Hathaway, finds herself back in Miranda’s employ after experiencing a setback in her career. The film features classic characters, with Nigel portraying Stanley Tucci and Emily, played by Emily Blunt, now delving into fashion design.
Among the film’s highlights is a Met Gala-inspired scene featuring Streep in a striking red taffeta gown with an off-the-shoulder neckline. This scene was filmed at the Museum of Natural History in August 2025.
As anticipation built for the film’s release, the cast engaged in a worldwide press tour, showcasing their style at various premieres. Streep made a memorable appearance at the March premiere in Mexico City, wearing a navy long-sleeved dress adorned with gold buttons. At a subsequent press event in Seoul, she donned a black bell-sleeved top paired with matching slacks.
On April 20, Streep attended the film’s world premiere at Lincoln Center in New York City, where she sported a bold tiger-printed fur coat. Her ensemble also included a striking red leather cape paired with black accessories.
Throughout the press events leading up to the film’s release, Streep consistently impressed with her fashion choices, including an ivory shirt and red coat at the London premiere, which echoed the movie’s poster design.
Streep’s decision to forgo the Met Gala serves as a reminder of her preference for focusing on her work in film rather than major fashion events.
