Ryan Coogler Highlights Important DGA Healthcare Issues and Discusses Government’s Impact at DGA Awards
Ryan Coogler Acknowledges DGA’s Healthcare Support During Honors Speech
Ryan Coogler expressed gratitude to the Directors Guild of America (DGA) for their healthcare initiatives during a recent event where he received his DGA nominees’ medallion from actor Michael B. Jordan. Coogler’s remarks come amid important negotiations regarding the union’s healthcare plans.
In his speech, Coogler reflected on the significance of healthcare amidst personal challenges. “I’m extra nervous today because my anchor, my life partner, is not here. My wife and producer, Zinzi, is at home with our son, who is fairly sick, and we’re new to the parenting thing,” he shared. He held up his DGA membership and insurance cards, eliciting enthusiastic applause from the audience. “I’ve never been prouder to have one of these,” he added.
Coogler noted the disparities faced by many DGA members concerning healthcare accessibility. “As studio filmmakers, we can probably afford the hospital visits. It’s a lot of members who wouldn’t be able to, so I’m forever grateful to the guild—for all its flawed history, you know what I mean? I’m proud that we take care of each other,” he stated.
His comments resonated with host Kumail Nanjiani’s earlier remarks regarding the DGA’s historical issues. Nanjiani had highlighted the guild’s past association with D.W. Griffith and the importance of renaming the Lifetime Achievement Award, reflecting on Hollywood’s need to confront its history.
Coogler also underscored the importance of union membership in his own family history. He reminisced about his grandfather, a longshoreman who built their home, and his uncle, a member of the Black Panthers who supported the family through union work. “I always wanted to be a member of a union, and I’ve got to thank the DGA for accepting me,” Coogler concluded.
He further emphasized the current societal issues, referencing the historical actions taken by his family during times of unrest, saying, “They would shut the ports down whenever they saw any kind of domestic carnage, like we’re experiencing right now, at the hands of our government.”
Coogler’s heartfelt address brought attention to vital conversations around healthcare and union solidarity within the film industry.
