Rockets Secure Victory Over Lakers 115-96 in Game 4 to Stay in Playoffs
Rockets Prevail Over Lakers in Game 4, Force Game 5
The Houston Rockets kept their playoff hopes alive with a decisive 115-96 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers in Game 4 of the Western Conference playoff series on Sunday night. This win prevented the Rockets from facing elimination as they entered Game 5 set to take place on Wednesday in Los Angeles.
Amen Thompson led the charge for Houston, contributing 23 points, while Tari Eason added 20. Despite the absence of star player Kevin Durant for a third consecutive game due to injury, the Rockets showcased a balanced scoring attack. Houston’s starting lineup collectively scored in double digits, with Alperen Sengun contributing 19 points, Reed Sheppard 17, and Jabari Smith Jr. 16.
The Lakers were led by Deandre Ayton, who recorded 19 points and 10 rebounds before being ejected for a flagrant foul with just over five minutes remaining in the third quarter. Ayton’s exit came after he struck Sengun in the head, a move deemed "unnecessary and excessive" by the officiating crew. LeBron James struggled during the game, scoring just 10 points on 2-of-9 shooting, alongside nine assists and eight turnovers. His performance fell short compared to his previous outings, where he scored 19, 28, and 29 points in the earlier games of the series. The Lakers’ three-point shooting also faltered, making only five attempts, a stark contrast to their combined total of 35 in the first three games.
From the outset, the Rockets established their dominance following a heart-wrenching overtime loss in Game 3. Houston led by four at the end of the first quarter and extended their advantage to nine by halftime. A strong 12-4 run at the start of the third quarter propelled the Rockets to a commanding 68-51 lead. They increased their margin to 19 points later in the quarter and concluded it with a 90-65 lead entering the final frame.
With seven and a half minutes left in the game, Houston maintained a significant 23-point lead, prompting Lakers coach JJ Redick to clear his bench in response to the mounting deficit. Despite their struggles, the Rockets demonstrated resilience, leveraging their collective scoring and defensive efforts to stave off elimination.
Durant, who has been sidelined due to an ankle sprain, was present on the bench to support his teammates, while coach Ime Udoka noted Durant had been receiving treatment for his injury in the lead-up to the game.
As the series now shifts back to Los Angeles for Game 5, both teams will be looking to secure a pivotal win in this closely contested series.
