George Clooney Shares Thoughts on Paramount-WBD Merger and Redefines MAGA at Lincoln Center Tribute Gala
George Clooney Accepts Chaplin Award Amidst National Tension
George Clooney received the prestigious Chaplin Award from Film at Lincoln Center on Monday night, balancing humor with a poignant message regarding current national events.
During his acceptance speech, Clooney addressed the audience, stating, “On a night like tonight, with all of you here in this venue, I can’t just ignore what’s going on in the country. I disagree with everything this administration stands for, but there’s no place for this kind of violence that we saw two nights ago in Washington, DC. Nor is there room for violence in Minnesota … or anywhere else in this country.” His remarks came in the wake of a shooting incidents at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, which had ignited a wave of partisan disagreement.
The packed audience at Alice Tully Hall applauded as Clooney navigated a delicate line, emphasizing the need to counter hatred and corruption. “The struggle has to be won against hatred and corruption and cruelty, violence,” he said. “And it is a struggle for the soul of this republic. … We as citizens, what are we to do? And it is in that answer that all of us – left, right, and center – can build a more perfect union, heal our wounds and begin to truly make America great again.”
Clooney’s gala was enriched by a 40-minute montage highlighting his career, from early television roles to his acclaimed performances in ER and Oscar-winning films. Reflecting on his journey, presenters such as Julianna Margulies, John Turturro, and Sam Rockwell shared anecdotes from their collaborations with Clooney. A humorous video message from Matt Damon, who has worked alongside Clooney in six films, set a lighthearted tone for the evening, although he was unable to attend in person due to a prior pickleball commitment.
Closing the ceremony, Clooney expressed gratitude to the presenters and reminisced about his early days in the industry. He fondly recalled biking to auditions, including one at Paramount, where he encountered a colleague struggling with car troubles. “He was on a payphone – remember those?" Clooney quipped, referencing the upcoming Warner-Paramount merger as the audience erupted with laughter.
Late-night host Stephen Colbert, who welcomed Clooney as his first guest on The Late Show, participated in the tribute, praising Clooney’s work in Good Night, and Good Luck. Colbert acknowledged the film’s themes of courage and integrity exhibited by CBS News anchor Edward R. Murrow in the face of fearmongering and pressure. With a touch of humor, he added, “this inspiring film has now been seen by millions around the world, and hopefully, someday, by CBS.”
The evening honored Clooney’s contributions to film while grounding the celebration in the current societal landscape, underscoring the intersection of art, responsibility, and social awareness.
