Redondo Beach Pier is Back Open Following Police Incident
Redondo Beach Pier Reopens Following Police Investigation
LOS ANGELES COUNTY, Calif. (CNS) — The Redondo Beach Pier has reopened after a four-hour closure prompted by a police investigation into a reported hostage situation involving possible explosives.
Early Sunday morning, police received a call about the alleged incident around 9:35 a.m. Redondo Beach Police Lt. Mark Valdivia stated that officers quickly established a perimeter, directing residents and visitors in the area to shelter in place as they conducted a thorough search.
“After an extensive search, officers determined there was no active threat to the pier, nearby residents, or the surrounding community,” Valdivia reported. The FBI also contributed to the investigation, ensuring a comprehensive response.
The pier was cleared and reopened at approximately 1:35 p.m. During the closure, officials delayed the start of the nearby BeachLife Festival, which organizers later confirmed could proceed as planned. City Councilman Brad Waller addressed concerns on the festival’s Facebook page, assuring attendees that there was no direct threat to the event itself but emphasizing the importance of ensuring safety before allowing crowds to gather.
As the festival, featuring performances from artists such as Sheryl Crow, My Morning Jacket, and James Taylor, was set to conclude on Sunday, officials announced around 1:45 p.m. that they received clearance to open the venue.
Authorities are encouraging anyone with relevant information about the incident to reach out to the Redondo Beach Police Department Detective Bureau at 310-379-2477, ext. 3507.
