Rebel Wilson Defamation Trial Highlights Contentious Allegations

In a high-stakes defamation trial centered around The Deb, Rebel Wilson has been labeled a “fantastical liar” during the closing arguments presented in a Sydney courtroom. The lawsuit was brought forth by Charlotte MacInnes, the lead actress of the film, who claims Wilson damaged her reputation by alleging that MacInnes had filed a sexual harassment complaint against producer Amanda Ghost and later recanted for personal benefit.

MacInnes further contends that Wilson’s statements misrepresented her experiences, particularly regarding an incident in September 2023, which involved an uncomfortable shared bath between MacInnes and Ghost.

During the final statements on Friday, MacInnes’ barrister, Sue Chrysanthou, accused Wilson of engaging in a “complete revision of history.” She asserted that Wilson’s claims are fabricated and detrimental. “My client has been unable to eat, unable to sleep, has been distressed … (she) fears what Rebel Wilson is going to do to her next,” Chrysanthou stated, as reported by the Australian Associated Press.

Conversely, David Sibtain, representing Wilson, asserted that the notion of his client fabricating allegations against MacInnes was “preposterous.” He characterized the claims as lacking substantiated reasoning and emphasized that MacInnes’ career has flourished since she retracted her supposed complaint, citing her recent roles in a Ghost-produced Gatsby stage production and a record deal with Warner Music.

“That must have been a motivation in her mind for the change,” Sibtain remarked, noting the rapid progression of MacInnes’ career following the incident.

As the trial concludes, Justice Elizabeth Raper will deliberate on her verdict.
