Police Respond to Machete Incident in Oxnard
Oxnard Police Involved in Shooting During Incident with Armed Suspect
OXNARD, Calif. — An investigation is currently underway after police shot an armed man wielding a machete at a busy intersection on Monday afternoon. The incident occurred near Saviers and Pleasant Valley roads, prompting a significant response from law enforcement.
According to the Oxnard Police Department, officers were dispatched shortly after noon in response to multiple emergency calls about a man brandishing a machete in the area. Police located the suspect inside a store and issued several commands for him to drop the weapon. When he failed to comply, officers were compelled to engage in an officer-involved shooting.
Following the gunfire, the suspect continued to be uncooperative, necessitating the use of a police service dog to take him into custody. He was subsequently transported to Ventura County Medical Center, where he is reported to be in critical but stable condition.
While the officer involved in the incident was not injured, the police dog sustained minor injuries and received veterinary treatment. The identities of both the suspect and the involved officer have not yet been released, and details regarding any criminal charges remain unclear.
The Oxnard Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit, in collaboration with the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office, is conducting a comprehensive investigation. Officials noted that the incident was recorded by the officer’s body-worn camera and indicated that footage will be made available during a Community Critical Incident Debriefing, with the release date yet to be determined.
As part of standard procedure, the involved officer has been placed on administrative leave while the investigation continues.
