Police Look Into Possible Terrorism Link After Car Crashes Into Nevada Power Substation Gate
Investigation Underway After Car Rams Southern Nevada Power Substation
Las Vegas police are probing a potential terrorism-related incident involving a car that crashed into a power substation in southern Nevada owned by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP). No immediate threat to public safety has been reported, according to Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Sheriff Kevin McMahill.
The series of events began Thursday morning when Boulder City police received reports of a vehicle breaching a substation gate. Video footage from police social media shows a Nissan Sentra speeding through a fence, ultimately coming to a stop in a secure area.
In a statement, LADWP confirmed its awareness of the incident and stated that there were "no impacts or disruptions to our operations." Boulder City Police Chief Timothy Shea added that there is no evidence of significant damage to critical infrastructure.
The 23-year-old driver involved in the incident was from Albany, New York, and was reported missing prior to the crash. Authorities later discovered the man deceased in the driver’s seat, suffering from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. McMahill revealed that the individual had communicated with family members before the incident, indicating thoughts of self-harm and mentioning a desire to commit an act that would garner media attention. He reportedly referred to himself as a terrorist in a message to his mother.
During the investigation, police recovered explosive materials and multiple books related to extremist ideologies from the man’s hotel room, including topics on both right and left-wing extremism, environmental extremism, white supremacism, and anti-government sentiments. Additionally, law enforcement reported that the individual was wearing "soft-body armor" and that two shotguns, an assault rifle-style pistol, and flamethrowers were found in his rental car.
Officials also uncovered a 3D printer and various gun components at an Albany residence linked to the man.
Boulder City, located approximately 25 miles southeast of Las Vegas, is home to the Hoover Dam, a significant engineering achievement that provides water and hydroelectric power to millions in Nevada, Arizona, and California.
This incident follows a previous similar event in 2023, when a man crashed a vehicle into a solar power facility near Las Vegas. That individual was later deemed unfit for trial.
