Paul Thomas Anderson Honors His First Oscar Win by Apologizing to Children for Our World’s Messiness
Renowned filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson has received his first Oscar, winning in the Adapted Screenplay category for his latest film, One Battle After Another. During his acceptance speech, Anderson dedicated the accolade to his four children.
Opening his remarks, he expressed gratitude, saying, “Thank you very, very much. I’m incredibly honored to be part of this history. This is an adaption, so I owe a huge debt of admiration and love to Thomas Pynchon. Any writer knows that you either beg for forgiveness or your special thanks is really to your family and the people that you share a roof with who put up with what it means to live with a writer.” The film, featuring Leonardo DiCaprio, is based on Pynchon’s 1990 novel, Vineland.
Anderson also took a moment to acknowledge his wife, actress and comedian Maya Rudolph, stating, “To Maya.”

The acclaimed director, previously nominated for 11 Academy Awards prior to receiving three additional nominations for One Battle After Another this year, highlighted the film’s themes of generational responsibility. The story follows a young girl, played by Chase Infiniti, who embraces her revolutionary parents’ legacy on her own terms.
“I wrote this movie for my kids to say sorry for the housekeeping mess that we left in this world we’re handing off to them, but also with the encouragement that they will be the generation that hopefully brings us some common sense and decency,” he concluded. “My Pearl, Lucille, Jack and Ida, I love you.”
One Battle After Another is also nominated for Best Picture and Best Director. In the Best Supporting Actress category, Teyana Taylor, who was seen as a strong contender for her role as Perfidia Beverly Hills, lost to Amy Madigan. Sean Penn won the Best Supporting Actor award, besting co-star Benicio Del Toro. Additionally, casting director Cassandra Kulukundis made history by winning the inaugural Oscar for her work on the film.
