Paradise Cast Reflects on the Emotional Impact of That Season 2 Death
Spoilers Ahead: Paradise Season 2, Episode 4 – “A Holy Charge”
In the latest episode of Hulu’s Paradise, Shailene Woodley’s character, Annie, confronts the harsh realities of a post-apocalyptic world. The episode, titled "A Holy Charge," reveals a gripping shift in Annie’s journey as she embarks on a quest with Xavier, played by Sterling K. Brown, to find his wife, Teri, in Atlanta. Their mission is also a prelude to a planned journey to Colorado and an underground bunker.
Annie’s background as a medical student brings unforeseen complications to her pregnancy, as her recordings of high blood pressure suggest the onset of preeclampsia. The urgency of her situation escalates when Xavier finds himself overwhelmed by the prospect of delivering the baby.
In a moment of desperation, Xavier seeks help from a group they previously encountered on the street, who are repurposing an old Chevrolet truck as a horse-drawn carriage. Although Annie initially opposes this idea, fearing that the family might contribute more harm than assistance, she soon finds herself surrounded by a community of compassionate volunteers ready to support her.
Despite the successful delivery of her baby, Annie’s refusal to accept further medical care leads to tragic consequences as her preeclampsia causes excessive bleeding. Brown reflects on Annie’s tragic arc, stating, “Through her expiring, her death, her passing, she recognizes that this man was willing to risk things to make sure that we could survive… It’s such a gorgeous arc.”
As the group offers to take Annie’s daughter, Xavier stands firm in his promise to ensure the child meets her father, played by Thomas Doherty. In a poignant final letter, Annie expresses her hope that Xavier will teach her child to embrace humanity and connection, contrary to her own fears.
Woodley describes the emotional weight of her character’s journey: “I think it’s the greatest joy a human can experience, bringing a child into the world, and then obviously the greatest pain… I contemplated… how to just be as honest and truthful to the moment as possible.”
