Olympic Medalist Prepares for This Year’s ASICS LA Marathon
Deena Kastor Gears Up for 41st ASICS LA Marathon
Olympic bronze medalist Deena Kastor is preparing for the annual ASICS LA Marathon, set to take place on March 8. This year marks the race’s 41st occurrence since its inception in 1986.
As anticipation builds for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, Kastor reflected on her own journey into the sport, inspired by Joan Benoit Samuelson’s gold medal victory in the women’s marathon during the 1984 LA Games. This landmark event allowed women to compete in the marathon for the first time, ultimately leading to the establishment of the LA Marathon.
“The LA Marathon was born out of the 1984 Olympics,” Kastor stated. She will serve as part of the media team covering this year’s marathon, which will be broadcast by NBC4 and Telemundo 52.
Kastor emphasized the significance of the year, noting, “It’s a perfect year to be at NBC,” especially as the nation rallies behind Team USA. The marathon course highlights iconic Los Angeles landmarks, running from Dodger Stadium through the Hollywood sign, Sunset Boulevard, and ending at Santa Monica Boulevard and Avenue of the Stars in Century City.
Kastor described the course as “every mile filled with everything that represents Los Angeles and the melting pot of such a rich culture.” She encouraged those involved, whether running or spectating, to familiarize themselves with the route and the sights along the way.
“It’s our chance to be great hosts,” Kastor added. “Not just for Los Angeles, but for our nation to welcome the world and showcase all that Los Angeles has to offer.”
The marathon is expected to draw over 25,000 participants, starting at 7 a.m. on March 8, showcasing the energy and diversity of the city.
