Aidan Martinez Makes a Comeback for Birmingham After Tommy John Surgery in This Prep Baseball Update
Birmingham High’s Aidan Martinez Shines in Return from Tommy John Surgery
BIRMINGHAM HIGH — Aidan Martinez made a triumphant return to the mound on Monday, two years after undergoing Tommy John surgery on his right elbow. The Birmingham High closer contributed significantly to the Patriots’ 7-4 victory over Ventura in the Easton tournament, striking out three batters, walking three, and allowing no hits in 1 1/3 innings of play.
This performance marks a positive development for Birmingham, which is already benefiting from the talents of sophomore pitchers Carlos Acuna and Nate Solis. Freshman Ivan Rivera took the mound as the starter against Ventura.
"He’s getting better every day," said Coach Matt Mowry, reflecting on Martinez’s performance. "He looked good. He was just a little rusty. He has a good arm and is going to help us out."
The game experienced a temporary delay earlier when Ventura High went into lockdown. A police chase involving a suspected stolen vehicle concluded outside the school, leading to suspects fleeing into the premises before being apprehended.
In other tournament action, Villa Park triumphed over Downey, 12-3, with Aiden Young hitting an RBI double and Gunner Santillo contributing three hits. The Easton tournament semifinals are set for Wednesday, featuring matchups including Calabasas facing St. Francis and Oaks Christian against Bishop Alemany. The winners of these games will compete at Birmingham on Friday night.
In additional scores from the tournament, Bishop Alemany edged out Culver City 1-0, with DC Ravago delivering a standout one-hit shutout and seven strikeouts, while Calabasas secured a narrow victory over Rio Mesa, 5-4, thanks to Connor Kingston’s save in a tight seventh inning.
Other notable games included Cleveland’s 6-4 win over Camarillo, Agoura’s narrow 4-3 victory against Mira Costa, and Valencia’s 2-1 triumph over Oxnard Pacifica.
As the tournament progresses, teams are gearing up for semifinal matchups that promise to deliver high stakes and competitive play.
