Olivia Rodrigo Shares the Album That Helps Her Feel Grounded and Centered
Olivia Rodrigo Discusses Inspiration from Alanis Morissette’s Iconic Album
In an upcoming episode of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s podcast Music Makes Us, Olivia Rodrigo shares the album that fuels her passion for music. The episode, hosted by Kathleen Hanna, is set to premiere on December 16.
Rodrigo, 22, reveals that Alanis Morissette’s Jagged Little Pill serves as her go-to source of inspiration. In a clip from the podcast, Hanna, 57, prompts Rodrigo to reflect on the music that helps her reconnect with herself. Rodrigo confidently emphasizes, "Honestly, I listen to Jagged Little Pill when I’m feeling, like, I don’t know what to say or like, who am I?"
The pop artist expresses a deep connection to the album, noting its ability to encapsulate the complexities of human emotions. "There’s so much anger and spite and jealousy but also so much joy and hope, all intertwined in such a beautiful way," she elaborates. Rodrigo admires how Morissette’s work resonates with authenticity: "It’s her being herself and letting it all pour out. As a writer, that’s always the most inspiring thing."
Rodrigo recalls her first encounter with Morissette’s music at the age of 13, when she was struck by the emotional depth of the songs. "I heard ‘Perfect’ and thought, ‘Oh, my God… You can write songs like that?’" Rodrigo reflects, illustrating the profound influence the album had on her perception of songwriting.
The two artists have shared a connection over the years, highlighted by Rodrigo’s induction of Morissette into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2022. Their mutual respect within the music industry is further exemplified by a notable performance in which Rodrigo invited Morissette on stage during a concert in May 2022.
The Music Makes Us podcast, which premiered on November 18, features conversations with various artists across multiple generations and genres, including Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees Chaka Khan and Nancy Wilson. New episodes are released weekly, available on major podcast platforms.
