Nicole Kidman Shares Her Experience of Being Paid Little for the Popular AMC Ad
Nicole Kidman Discusses Her Iconic AMC Ad, Revealing She Received No Payment
Nicole Kidman recently revealed that she was paid “nothing” for her now-legendary AMC advertisement. The actress took part in the commercial to support movie theaters during the COVID-19 pandemic, which has since transformed into a significant cultural phenomenon.
During an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Kidman shared insights about the ad’s production, emphasizing the challenges she faced in bringing this passion project to life. "We did it for nothing, and then it went off," she said, noting that she had to rally her colleagues, including cinematographer Jeff Cronenweth and screenwriter Billy Ray, to join the effort pro bono.
Kidman recalled the moment she proposed the idea, stating, “I said, ‘Should we do this? We need to help the theaters.’ It was during COVID when we did it." Her determination to support a struggling industry was evident, as she solicited help from her crew while filming Being the Ricardos.
The commercial showcases Kidman in a pinstripe suit, enjoying popcorn, and has sparked a wave of parodies and references across social media. Its memorable line—“We come to this place for magic”—has resonated with many, further solidifying its place in pop culture.
Despite the lack of a financial reward, the ad has enhanced Kidman’s internet presence and earned her "cool mom" status with her daughters, Sunday Rose and Faith Margaret. Reflecting on the unexpected success of the commercial, she noted that Olivia Rodrigo’s tribute to it during her Guts World Tour in 2024 garnered Kidman “major points” with her girls, prompting her to share a heartfelt response on Instagram.
The impact of the AMC ad on Kidman’s career, as well as its role in reviving interest in cinematic experiences, highlights the power of creative projects even in challenging times.
