Nick Reiner Scheduled for Arraignment in Parents’ Murder Case
Nick Reiner Charged with First-Degree Murder of Parents in Brentwood
Nick Reiner, 32, has been charged with first-degree murder following the deaths of his parents, Rob Reiner, 78, and Michele Singer Reiner, 68. Their bodies were discovered on December 14 at their Brentwood home in Los Angeles.
Scheduled for arraignment on Wednesday, Nick Reiner is facing serious allegations, including a special circumstances charge of multiple murders and an additional accusation that he used a knife during the attacks. These circumstances could enhance the gravity of the charges, potentially leading to a death sentence if prosecutors pursue capital punishment, as indicated by Los Angeles County Senior Deputy District Attorney John Hochman.
According to the Los Angeles County Office of Medical Examiner, the couple died from "multiple sharp force injuries," and the death certificates state they were killed "with knife, by another." In a significant development, the Los Angeles Police Department has placed a security hold on details surrounding the case, restricting the release of further information, including the medical examiner’s report.
Nick Reiner appeared in court for the first time on December 17, where he was ordered to remain in jail without bond. His attorney, Alan Jackson, spoke to reporters, expressing condolences to the Reiner family and highlighting the complexity of the case. “This is a devastating tragedy that has befallen the Reiner family,” Jackson stated, urging a measured approach as the legal process unfolds.
Earlier this week, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department reported that Nick Reiner is no longer on suicide watch, although he continues to be monitored. A sealed medical order concerning his mental health condition could result in delays in the proceedings. Sources have confirmed that he was being treated for schizophrenia at the time of his parents’ deaths, with adjustments to his medication noted in the days leading up to the tragedy.
The Reiner family, known for their prominence in Hollywood, has publicly acknowledged the challenges they faced, including battles with addiction. Rob Reiner, acclaimed for films such as "When Harry Met Sally…," "A Few Good Men," and "This Is Spinal Tap," and Michele Reiner, a talented photographer and producer, were remembered fondly by their colleagues and friends.
In a statement following their brother’s initial court appearance, Nick Reiner’s siblings, Jake and Romy, expressed profound grief. “The horrific and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, is something that no one should ever experience,” they said.
This tragic incident continues to resonate across the Hollywood community, sparking discussions about mental health and family struggles. As the legal process proceeds, many are calling for understanding and respect for the Reiner family’s privacy during this difficult time.
