Netflix to Create Documentary Series on the Disappearance of Cyclist Tony Parsons During a Charity Ride
Scottish Cancer Survivor’s Tragic Death to Be Explored in Netflix Documentary
A new Netflix UK documentary series will tell the poignant story of Tony Parsons, a Scottish cancer survivor who lost his life during a 100-mile charity bike ride. The series, currently in production, is expected to air later this year.
Parsons, a former Royal Navy officer, was tragically struck and killed by a drunk driver in 2017 while riding alone in Scotland. The driver, Alexander McKellar, concealed Parsons’ body in a remote peat bog following the incident. He later fled the scene with his twin brother, Robert.
For years, the circumstances surrounding Parsons’ disappearance remained shrouded in mystery. The case took a turn when Alexander McKellar confessed to his girlfriend, leading her to inform the police about the hidden grave. In 2023, the twins were sentenced to 12 years and five years in prison, respectively. Following the trial, Parsons’ family was awarded a six-figure compensation payout. In a statement, they expressed relief, saying, “At last justice has been done.”
The Netflix documentary follows a similar project by the BBC, which aired a well-received two-part series titled The Vanishing Cyclist in August last year. This earlier documentary covered a six-year quest for justice involving a missing persons case, a criminal investigation, and a high-profile court trial.
Netflix has chosen not to comment on the upcoming documentary.
