Lia Buman Appointed Head of Global Acquisitions at Paramount Pictures
Lia Buman has been named the new Head of Global Acquisitions and Republic Pictures at Paramount Pictures. In her new role, Buman will manage Republic Pictures as it focuses on developing commercially-driven films with a strong independent identity.
Buman, a producer known for her work on the Cannes-premiered The History of Sound and the NEON acquisition Together at Sundance, will report directly to Paramount Pictures Co-Chairs Dana Goldberg and Josh Greenstein.
Prior to her appointment, Buman co-founded Tango in 2017 with Tim Headington and guided it into a prominent platform for artist-driven storytelling. Her expertise will be instrumental in creating a unified acquisitions and production strategy that integrates Paramount’s global framework with the independent film sector.
Under Buman’s leadership, Paramount aims to strengthen its global acquisitions pipeline. As the Head of Global Acquisitions, she will spearhead a broadened strategy that includes worldwide acquisitions, co-productions, theatrical releases, split-rights deals, and multi-territory partnerships within the independent feature market.
Supporting Buman in the acquisitions team will be Sejin Croninger, the EVP of Worldwide Acquisitions, Strategy, and Operations, who will continue to lead global acquisition efforts and manage lifecycle operations across the studio’s distribution network. Additionally, Max Silva has been named SVP of Production & Development for Republic Pictures, also moving from Tango.
Goldberg and Greenstein commented, "Lia is an exceptional executive with deep relationships across the independent community and a proven ability to identify distinctive voices and commercial opportunities. By uniting acquisitions and a revitalized Republic Pictures under one leadership structure, we’re creating a business that leverages the full strength of Paramount’s global infrastructure while embracing the flexibility, entrepreneurial spirit, and creative diversity of the independent ecosystem."
Buman expressed her gratitude, stating, “I’m grateful to Dana, Josh, and everyone at Paramount for the trust they’ve placed in me as we build this new chapter for the studio. For more than twenty years I have been part of the independent film community in various capacities. This new role allows me to draw on all my experience to support Paramount’s creative and strategic goals through acquisitions while also shaping a focused, purposeful direction for the Republic Pictures banner. I’m incredibly proud of the team we’ve put together and look forward to building, making, and acquiring an ambitious slate of bold and entertaining films.”
During her tenure at Tango, Buman oversaw nearly 30 film productions, championing acclaimed projects and directorial debuts that included Together, Sorry, Baby, Aftersun, Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, and Little Woods.
Before co-founding Tango, Buman held key positions as President of Acquisitions at Focus Features, EVP of Acquisitions at FilmDistrict, and VP of Acquisitions at Sony Pictures. Her notable projects include Atomic Blonde, Nocturnal Animals, Olympus Has Fallen, Looper, Safety Not Guaranteed, and various early entries in the Insidious franchise.
