Netflix Supports Ted Sarandos Amid Diddy’s Criticism and Legal Concerns: “This Isn’t an Attack,” Says Network About 50 Cent’s Docuseries
Netflix Responds to Sean Combs’ Claims of Retaliation Following Docuseries Release
In a swift rebuttal, Netflix has dismissed allegations from Sean Combs regarding its latest docuseries, Sean Combs: The Reckoning. This comes less than a day after the four-part series, produced by Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson, was released. Combs has accused the streaming giant of engaging in “corporate retaliation” after he declined an earlier proposal to create a documentary under Netflix’s control.
Combs’ attorneys sent a cease-and-desist letter on December 1, which asserted that Netflix’s approach stemmed from a desire to compel the Grammy-winning artist—currently embroiled in legal issues—to join a project he rejected due to concerns over creative control. The letter further alleged that 50 Cent had financially incentivized individuals to disparage Combs, and claimed footage aired in the docuseries was “stolen.”
As Combs prepares to pursue legal action, Netflix has categorically refuted these claims. “The project has no ties to any past conversations between Sean Combs and Netflix,” stated a representative, addressing the relationship between co-CEO Ted Sarandos and Combs. “The footage related to Combs was legally obtained,” the representative added, asserting that this was not an act of retribution. “Curtis Jackson is an executive producer but does not have creative control. No one was paid to participate.”
Despite the sharp denial from Netflix, it appears that the saga may continue in court, potentially adding another chapter to this unfolding drama.
In earlier developments, Combs’ lawyers alleged in the December 1 letter that Netflix’s selection of 50 Cent as a producer was retaliatory, following Combs’ rejection of a documentary proposal by Sarandos. The letter noted that Combs is a long-time friend of Sarandos, pointing to past interactions, including attendance at Sarandos’ birthday party.
The communication detailed how Combs had declined to surrender creative autonomy, which they argued led to Netflix pursuing a one-sided portrayal through the involvement of Jackson, whom they portrayed as harboring animosity towards Combs. Citing the docuseries’ portrayal of Combs’ alleged criminal behavior, the letter accused Netflix’s actions of contextualizing what they described as corporate retribution as a personal conflict between two prominent figures.
While critics of the docuseries suggest it may reflect poorly on Combs, his legal team vehemently asserted that participants would be incentivized to portray him unfavorably. “It is a virtual certainty that the Program will be replete with false and defamatory statements,” they claimed, warning of privacy violations and breaches of non-disclosure agreements.
Combs, who is currently serving a four-year sentence with an appeal in progress, is incarcerated at a minimal-security facility. His release is slated for June 2028, amid further allegations stemming from a 2020 incident currently under investigation.
On the public front, Netflix has maintained that it obtained the purportedly incriminating footage legally, despite Combs’ assertions of copyright infringement. Director Alexandria Stapleton commented on the legal acquisition of behind-the-scenes footage, which Combs had hoped to use for his own documentary.
As it stands, viewing figures for Sean Combs: The Reckoning have not been disclosed, but indications suggest it may debut on Netflix’s domestic Top 10 chart shortly. With various legal battles looming over Combs, it remains to be seen how this latest controversy will unfold in the coming weeks.
