Netflix Cancels ‘The Abandons’ and ‘The Vince Staples Show’
Netflix Cancels “The Abandons” and “The Vince Staples Show” Amid Viewership Declines
In a significant programming shift, Netflix will not move forward with additional seasons of its drama The Abandons and comedy The Vince Staples Show. This decision follows the release of the platform’s semi-annual viewership report for July to December 2025.
The report highlights that The Abandons, which premiered on December 4, earned 19.8 million views in its first 28 days. The series, featuring Lena Headey and Gillian Anderson, managed to secure the No. 4 spot on Netflix’s Top 10 for English series in its initial two weeks, accumulating 7.4 million views in week one and 7.6 million views in week two. However, the show saw a rapid decline in interest, dropping from the Top 10 and adding only 4.8 million views in the subsequent 17 days.
Compounding its struggles, The Abandons, which had a substantial budget, faced a behind-the-scenes shake-up, with creator Kurt Sutter departing production before its conclusion. Some cast members have already begun to pursue new opportunities. Notably, Headey will continue her association with Netflix in a lead role for Charlie Brooker’s upcoming four-part detective series.
Set in Washington Territory around 1854, The Abandons follows two distinct families’ matriarchs, portrayed by Headey and Anderson. The series was produced by an executive team that included Chris Keyser, Robert Askins, Stephen Surjik, Otto Bathurst, Emmy Grinwis, and Jon Paré.
Meanwhile, The Vince Staples Show, which debuted its second season on November 6, ranked No. 1,446 on Netflix’s viewership report, garnering 1.7 million views. In comparison, the first season amassed 4.6 million views over a more extended period, from February 15 to June 30, 2024. Despite not achieving widespread popularity, the comedy received positive critical acclaim, with scores of 94% from critics and 88% from viewers on Rotten Tomatoes.
Created by rapper Vince Staples, Ian Edelman, and Maurice Williams, the show is a satirical portrayal inspired by Staples’ life. Executive producers included Kenya Barris, Staples, Corey Smyth, William Stefan Smith, Andrea Sperling, and Leonard Chang.
As Netflix refines its content offerings, the future of high-profile projects will undoubtedly remain a focus of industry speculation.
