Netflix Acquires Global Rights to ‘Ticket To Ride’ Board Game for Upcoming Film Adaptation
Netflix Acquires Rights for ‘Ticket to Ride’ Movie Adaptation
In a significant move, Netflix has secured exclusive global rights to adapt the popular board game Ticket to Ride into a feature film. This announcement follows the streaming service’s recent acquisition of similar rights to the widely popular game Catan.
The screenplay for the Ticket to Ride film is being crafted by Ben Mekler and Chris Amick, while Darren Kyman will produce on behalf of Asmodee. Joining him are Eric Tannenbaum and Kim Tannenbaum from the Tannenbaum Company, along with Jonathan Levine and Gillian Bohrer for Megamix. Alan R. Moon, the creator of the game, will serve as an executive producer representing Asmodee.
Netflix’s agreement encompasses both scripted and unscripted projects, paving the way for possible television adaptations and other formats. If Mekler and Amick’s film reaches audiences first, it will mark the first on-screen adaptation of the beloved game.
Since its launch in 2004, Ticket to Ride has become a pop culture phenomenon, selling over 20 million copies and being translated into more than 30 languages. The game involves players collecting colored train cards to claim railway routes connecting various cities, whether in the U.S., Europe, or beyond. Longer routes yield higher points.
Alan R. Moon expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “Just when I thought life couldn’t get more exciting, Ticket to Ride is teaming up with Netflix. I can’t wait to help bring these exciting projects to the millions of fans of the game.”
The Ticket to Ride adaptation joins Netflix’s expanding slate of game-to-screen projects, which also includes Arcane, Castlevania, Family Pack (The Werewolves of Miller’s Hollow), Exploding Kittens, the forthcoming Assassin’s Creed series, and a Monopoly reality competition series, in addition to a new film based on Gears of War.
The deal was negotiated by CAA and Goodman, Genow, Schenkman on behalf of Asmodee. Mekler and Amick are represented by Good Fear Content and CAA, with Amick also having representation from Ziffren Brittenham.
