Mubi Announces the Release Date for Wong Kar Wai’s First TV Series, ‘Blossoms Shanghai’
Mubi has announced the release date for Blossoms Shanghai, the debut television series from prominent Hong Kong filmmaker Wong Kar Wai. The highly anticipated show will premiere on February 26 and will be available in select territories, accompanied by key art and an exclusive clip.
In a notable departure from traditional release schedules, Mubi will present Blossoms Shanghai in three segments, each consisting of 10 episodes, with each segment containing 45 minutes of content. New episodes will be made available every four weeks.
Set against the vibrant backdrop of 1990s Shanghai and adapted from Jin Yucheng’s novel, the series chronicles the journey of Ah Bao, who transforms from an ordinary individual into the renowned tycoon "Mr. Bao." Guided by his mentor Uncle Ye, the restaurant owner Ling Zi, and Miss Wang from the Foreign Trade Office, Ah Bao navigates the opportunities created by the city’s economic reforms. However, the arrival of a mysterious woman who opens The Grand Lisbon restaurant threatens to unravel his success, revealing the delicate interplay between achievement, memory, and longing. The cast features notable actors Hu Ge, Ma Yili, Tang Yan, Xin Zhilei, and You Benchang.
Although Blossoms Shanghai originally aired in China over two years ago, international audiences have eagerly awaited its release. Wong Kar Wai is renowned for his critically acclaimed films, including Chungking Express, In the Mood for Love, and 2046.
In recent months, Mubi has faced challenges but has continued to expand its television series offerings. The company has acquired several notable titles, including Joe Wright’s Mussolini: Son of the Century, Cooper Raiff’s Hal & Harper, William Kentridge’s Self Portrait as a Coffee Pot, and Lars von Trier’s The Kingdom Trilogy.
