Moonchild Takes the Stage at Wiltern: A Trio’s Journey Through Grief in Their Latest Album
Moonchild to Make Historic Debut at the Wiltern
Moonchild, an innovative progressive R&B trio formed in Los Angeles, is set to perform at the esteemed Wiltern Theater for the first time. Members of the band—multi-instrumentalists Andris Mattson, Amber Navran, and Max Bryk—recently visited the venue to take in the significance of the moment, as their name illuminated on the marquee.
“It’s a historic venue, and we’re absolutely excited about playing there,” Mattson said from his home, reflecting on the anticipation surrounding the event.
Navran shared her fond memories of past performances at the Wiltern, recalling standout shows by artists such as Erykah Badu and Lalah Hathaway, the latter of whom contributed to Moonchild’s album "Starfruit" and is featured on their latest release, "Waves." The upcoming concert on Saturday, May 2, will spotlight this new album, which diverges from the band’s previous four records.
"Waves" presents a departure in both sound and sentiment. While earlier albums are characterized by heartfelt love songs, the new collection delves into personal struggles and emotional turmoil. “The lyrics are very personal,” Navran disclosed, revealing that her experiences with miscarriages and infertility significantly influenced the songwriting.
The album opens with "Ride the Wave," which confronts painful truths, while "Sick" delivers an unflinching look at self-deception. Featuring guest artists like Rapsody and Jill Scott, “Waves” aims to encapsulate raw, visceral emotions.
“It’s wild that we can now call these heroes friends,” Mattson noted, referencing the band’s long journey. Over the past 15 years, Moonchild has had the opportunity to collaborate with influential artists like Robert Glasper, who has publicly praised the band since they first gained recognition in 2012, when Stevie Wonder selected them as the opening act for his tour.
The trio, known for their distinct sound and deep grooves, has cultivated a unique musical identity. “We’re not trying to sound like anybody else,” Mattson asserted. Their eclectic instrumentation includes saxophones, trumpets, and synthesizers, contributing to a baroque yet understated style.
Moonchild’s journey began at the University of Southern California in 2011, and the original lineup has remained intact. “We all get along. We enjoy creating together,” Navran remarked.
As the band weighs their setlist for the performance, they strive to balance fan-favorites with fresh material. “It’s always a balance,” Bryk explained, acknowledging that while new songs excite them, attendees often favor familiarity.
Engaging the audience is key for Moonchild. “Amber helps with that,” Mattson added, noting her role in creatively arranging songs to keep the crowd moving.
Looking ahead to their next project, Navran expressed a desire to collaborate with Erykah Badu, inspired by her own musical influences. “That would be amazing,” she said, highlighting the band’s ongoing collaborations with talented artists.
