Montebello Fire Linked to Domestic Violence Claims One Life and Leaves Two Others Seriously Injured
Arson Suspected in Fatal Montebello House Fire
MONTEBELLO, Calif. – A tragic early morning fire in Montebello has left one young man dead and two others in critical condition, prompting authorities to investigate the incident as an act of domestic violence.
The blaze, which reportedly involved gasoline as an accelerant, broke out at a multi-unit complex on 5th Street between Whittier Boulevard and Los Angeles Avenue. Emergency crews arrived to find the fire consuming one of the units, as multiple families sought to escape the chaos.
Police have identified the suspect as the ex-boyfriend of the female homeowner. Authorities believe he deliberately entered her residence, poured gasoline, and ignited the fire, which also engulfed himself. Paramedics found the woman suffering from severe burns and transported her to a local hospital, where she remains in critical condition. Tragically, her son, aged between 13 and 20, was unable to escape and died inside the home.
Following the incident, witnesses reported that the suspect fled approximately two blocks before reaching his parked vehicle at 7th Street and Los Angeles Avenue. As he ran, he allegedly shouted, "shoot me! shoot me! kill me! kill me!" Police quickly pursued him and apprehended him at the scene, where remnants of his burned clothing were discovered.
An officer who provided chase requested immediate medical assistance, ultimately saving the suspect’s life. He is currently hospitalized under police custody and remains in critical condition.
Montrebello detectives are working in conjunction with arson investigators to examine the crime scene further and confirm the type of accelerant used. The suspect faces potential charges of murder and arson pending his medical recovery.
As the investigation continues, details regarding the identities of the victims and the suspect have not been disclosed, and questions remain about how the suspect gained access to the home.
