Molly Shannon Makes a Fun Comeback on ‘SNL’ as a Quirky High School Theater Teacher in a Sketch Finally Airing
In a recent Saturday Night Live sketch, Will Ferrell took on the role of an eccentric and unsparing high school theater instructor, joined by Molly Shannon in a hilarious reunion of former castmates. The sketch, which features a range of the current cast, humorously explores the anxieties of students awaiting the cast list for their spring musical, Grease. This segment was initially cut from Ferrell’s previous hosting appearance in 2019.
Jeremy Culhane, a featured player, played a student who recently booked a Cheerios commercial, eliciting envy from Ferrell’s character. Veronika Slowikowska also made her mark as a quirky student known for her humorous catchphrase, “girl boner!” when discussing various topics.
One standout moment included Ferrell’s claim that his “all white” interpretation of The Color Purple was “brave,” despite negative feedback from others. The sketch also featured Kenan Thompson, who, as a choreographer, quarreled with Sarah Sherman, whose character faced ridicule from Ferrell’s for being in a wheelchair.
The scene escalated when Shannon’s character, music director and choir teacher Ms. Peebles, cheerfully dismissed allegations of her being “too handsy.” Showcasing her authoritative style, she invited Tommy Brennan, another featured player, to demonstrate his vocal range. The comedic crescendo came when she pantomimed giving him a wedgie to encourage him to reach higher notes.
The bit showcased both the humor and chemistry of the SNL ensemble, effectively utilizing the strengths and backgrounds of its cast members.
