Mick Cronin Adjusts Lineup in UCLA’s Easy Win Over UC Riverside
UCLA Men’s Basketball Triumphs Over UC Riverside in 97-65 Win
In a decisive matchup at Pauley Pavilion, UCLA emerged victorious against UC Riverside with a commanding score of 97-65. The Bruins capitalized on their opponent’s weaknesses, allowing head coach Mick Cronin to experiment with various lineups.
Among the standout players were Trent Perry, Jamar Brown, and Brandon Williams, who contributed significantly off the bench. Perry showcased his playmaking ability, scoring 14 points and dishing out seven assists in just 24 minutes. Brown was a versatile force, adding four points, seven rebounds, and four steals, while Williams provided critical defensive support, albeit with three points and a rebound in 18 minutes.
The game revealed a potential shift in strategy for the Bruins, as Cronin found success with a three-guard lineup amid ongoing struggles from centers Xavier Booker and Steven Jamerson II. Bilodeau, who was particularly impressive, scored a career-high 34 points, making 12 of 19 shots and collecting six rebounds. Guard Skyy Clark supported the effort with 14 points, helping UCLA secure its third consecutive victory before an extended winter break.
Despite the lopsided score, UC Riverside’s Osiris Grady stood out for the Highlanders, finishing with 20 points as the team shot 42.6% from the field. The Highlanders’ defense, however, faltered, particularly against Bilodeau, who took full advantage of being left open early in the game.
Booker’s performance marked a continued decline, as he managed only six points and one rebound. His recent form has raised concerns after being limited to just three minutes against Cal Poly last week. Meanwhile, Jamerson’s struggles were evident as well, only playing seven minutes and being pulled from the game after failing to contain UCS Riverside’s offense.
As the Bruins navigate the season, Cronin’s adjustments and the development of the bench players will be crucial in the coming games.
