Michelle Obama Shares a Heartfelt Moment When She Told Sasha and Malia She Was Ready to Let Go

Michelle Obama recently shared candid reflections on her journey as a mother during the latest episode of her podcast, IMO with Michelle Obama & Craig Robinson. The former First Lady discussed a pivotal moment in her parenting experience with her daughters, Sasha, 24, and Malia, 27, whom she shares with former President Barack Obama.
During the podcast, Michelle described a challenging evening when her husband was away. "I tell this story all the time about Malia and Sasha; they were probably 7 and 3 at the time," she recalled. Michelle was attempting to get the girls to bed when their rambunctious behavior disrupted her plans. She instructed them to get ready for their baths, but in frustration, she felt unheard.
"I was in my frustrated mommy time, and I said, ‘Well, that’s it,’ " she explained. "You seem like you guys have this all figured out, and you can do this on your own. So have at it."
This declaration elicited contrasting reactions from her daughters. Malia, the older sibling, immediately responded, "Oh no, mommy, you know, I can’t do without you." Her plea was met with a sense of relief from Michelle, who wanted Malia to recognize her need for support.
In contrast, Sasha, then just 3 years old, appeared unfazed by her mother’s frustrations. Michelle described how Sasha simply picked up her blanket and headed upstairs, seemingly relieved by the situation as if to say, "Thank God, I can handle this." This prompted Michelle to intervene, reminding Sasha, “Turn around and get back here.”
Reflecting on the incident, Michelle noted, "Well, it worked for one, didn’t work for the other." When asked by guest Henry Winkler if she recognized these traits in her daughters today, Michelle confirmed they remained true to their personalities. "My younger daughter, she wants to learn her way," she observed. "She doesn’t want to be told that this is how you do it."
Through this candid discussion, Michelle Obama not only highlighted the joys and challenges of motherhood but also offered insights into the distinct personalities of her daughters.
