Michelle Obama recently honored her late friends Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner following their tragic deaths. The couple was found dead in their Los Angeles home on December 14.
On December 15, during her appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Michelle, 61, spoke about attending a planned gathering with the Reiners. The couple’s son, Nick Reiner, 32, was arrested on December 15 on a murder charge connected to his parents’ deaths.
“We’ve known them for many, many years, and we were supposed to be seeing them that night,” Michelle remarked, referring to the scheduled visit that evening, just before the unfortunate incident.
In a statement released shortly after the news broke, Barack Obama expressed his sorrow over the loss. He stated, “Michelle and I are heartbroken by the tragic passing of Rob Reiner and his beloved wife, Michele. Rob’s achievements in film and television gave us some of our most cherished stories on screen.”
He further acknowledged the couple’s commitment to philanthropy and activism, saying, “But beneath all of the stories he produced was a deep belief in the goodness of people—and a lifelong commitment to putting that belief into action. Together, he and his wife lived lives defined by purpose. They will be remembered for the values they championed and the countless people they inspired. We send our deepest condolences to all who loved them.”

Following Nick’s arrest, details began to emerge regarding events leading up to his parents’ deaths. Sources revealed that a heated dispute occurred between Rob and Nick during a holiday party hosted by Conan O’Brien shortly before the couple was discovered dead.
One witness noted, “Nick was freaking everyone out, acting crazy, kept asking people if they were famous.” Reports indicated that Rob and Michele left the party after the argument.

Rob and Michele, aged 68, were discovered deceased in their home by their daughter Romy. Following a call for medical assistance, the Los Angeles Fire Department arrived at the couple’s residence at approximately 3:30 PM on December 14.
Nick Reiner is currently being held without bail. He was located by authorities near the University of Southern California roughly six hours after his parents’ bodies were found and arrested at approximately 9:15 PM.

During her late-night appearance, Michelle also commented on the Reiners’ legacy, subtly criticizing Donald Trump without directly mentioning him. He had previously suggested their deaths were a result of “Trump derangement syndrome.”
“Let me just say this — unlike some people — Rob and Michele Reiner are some of the most decent, courageous people you ever want to know,” Michelle stated.
“They are not deranged or crazed; what they have always been are passionate people in a time when there’s not a lot of courage going on. They were the kind of people who were ready to put their actions behind what they cared about,” she added. “And they cared about their family and they cared about this country and they cared about fairness and equity. That is the truth; I do know them.”
