Mia Goth Shares Her Thoughts on the Marvel ‘Blade’ Project: “It Just Unraveled”
Mia Goth Updates on Marvel’s Blade Project Amidst Ongoing Delays
Mia Goth has shared insights into the current state of Marvel’s long-anticipated film Blade, which has faced numerous setbacks since its announcement.
In a recent interview with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Goth revealed that her involvement in the project has left her with more questions than answers. After being cast, she engaged in preliminary production activities but noted that the film “unraveled from there.”
"I don’t know what’s going on with that," Goth stated. "I think that they want to make it, and it’s such an important film for them that they’re taking their time with it. I really don’t have any information. I don’t know why it’s taken the time that it has, but we will see."
Goth recounted her experience with the project, mentioning a chemistry test with co-star Mahershala Ali in Atlanta, along with costume and wig fittings. "I was very excited in the direction it was going," she said, emphasizing Ali’s compelling interpretation of his character. However, she expressed disappointment at how quickly the project faltered.
Attached to the film since 2023, Goth was expected to portray Lilith, a significant supernatural antagonist in the Blade comics. Reports suggested that the new iteration would have a period setting. Costume pieces designed by Ruth Carter for the film have even been repurposed for Ryan Coogler’s upcoming vampire horror film Sinners, set in the 1930s.
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige recently affirmed that Blade remains in development, with Ali still confirmed to play the titular character, known as the Daywalker. Feige described the project as evolving through multiple iterations, including two previously conceived as period pieces. However, he stated that the creative team has decided to focus on a modern-day storyline.
The film’s release has been postponed since its initial announcement in 2019, primarily due to the pandemic and subsequent industry strikes. Marvel officially withdrew Blade from its 2025 release calendar late last year. The project has also seen the departure of early directors Bassam Tariq and Yann Demange.
Feige explained the decision to pause production, emphasizing the desire for a quality script. "We didn’t want to put a leather outfit on [Ali] and have him start killing vampires," he said, reaffirming the commitment to delivering a polished product.
In the latest development, Eric Pearson, known for his work on Agent Carter, Thor: Ragnarok, and Black Widow, has been reported as the script’s new writer.
