Menemsha Films Acquires North American Rights to Exciting New Film ‘The Soundman’ from Palm Springs Festival
EXCLUSIVE: Menemsha Films has secured North American rights to the Belgian drama The Soundman, which premiered to acclaim at the Palm Springs International Film Festival in January.
Set against the backdrop of the impending German invasion of Belgium and the Netherlands, the film explores the plight of Belgian Jews caught between the choice of remaining in their homeland or fleeing into uncertainty. This tension is interwoven with a love story and the intricate world of broadcast radio.
The narrative unfolds in the iconic Maison de la Radio Flagey in Brussels, home to the National Institute for Radio Broadcasting (NIR).
The story follows Elza (Femke Vanhove), a young actress making her debut in radio drama, who meets Berre, a talented soundman and foley artist known for his exceptional hearing. Their romance blossoms amid the looming crisis. The cast also includes Koen De Bouw (Professor T) and Peter Van den Begin (King of the Belgians).

This film marks a notable return to theatrical features for Belgian director and producer Frank Van Passel, previously recognized for his Cannes breakout film and Oscar submission Mannekin Pis, as well as Villa des Roses. His more recent work includes the mystery thriller series Moresnet.
The acquisition was facilitated by Menemsha’s Neil A. Friedman in collaboration with Tine Klint of LevelK, which continues to handle sales for the title at the European Film Market (EFM).
The Soundman is produced by Caviar, known for acclaimed films such as Sound of Metal, The Rider, and War Pony.
