Melissa Bergland Stars in Robert Lang’s Indie Horror Film ‘Sweetie’ Set in Hollywood
Exclusive: Indie Horror Film Sweetie Wraps Production in Los Angeles
Melissa Bergland, known for her role in Matlock, stars alongside Westly Heart Monroe, Corin Liall Douieb of Tiny Romances, Milanka Brooks from Black Mirror, Frankie J. Mitchell of American Primeval, and Aggy K. Adams of The Witcher in the indie psychological horror film Sweetie, which has just completed production in Los Angeles.
Written and directed by Robert Lang, Sweetie follows a young woman named Sweetie, portrayed by Bergland, as she navigates the treacherous landscape of Hollywood, driven by her aspirations for fame and fulfillment. However, as a serial killer terrorizes the city, Sweetie’s quest devolves into a nightmarish journey that blurs the line between reality and performance. Ultimately, the pursuit of fame offers her a transformative experience that is both consuming and irreversible.
Monroe takes on the role of Choker Darling, a rising drag queen. The cast also includes Conr Kinman, David Todman, Hannah McBride, Kris Alexandrea, Ianthe Mellors, Shaina Rae, Matthew Brown, Anna Newell, and Conor Copley.
Sweetie marks the second feature for Lang, following his directorial debut with the 2024 indie mockumentary Mind, Body and Soul, which featured Kinman, Bergland, and Eric Wu. This earlier work received prominent attention, including an endorsement from the Satanic Temple. Indican Pictures acquired the North American rights to Mind, Body and Soul, which Lang adapted from his short film about a recently exiled Satan (Kinman) seeking to reshape his public image with the help of a documentary crew.
The film enjoyed a limited theatrical release before becoming available on video-on-demand platforms.
