Melanie Martinez’s ‘POSSESSION’ Tops This Week’s Music Picks by Fans
Melanie Martinez Tops Billboard Poll with New Single "POSSESSION"
New York, NY – Melanie Martinez has made a significant impact on the music scene with her surprise single "POSSESSION," which has emerged as the top choice in this week’s fan-voted music poll.
Published on January 30, the poll conducted by Billboard revealed that fans overwhelmingly selected "POSSESSION" as their favorite new release. In a week that also featured new music from notable artists including Bruce Springsteen, Cannons, Noah Kahan, and Labrinth, Martinez’s track claimed an impressive 80% of the votes.
A press release for "POSSESSION" described the song as one that “peels back the ways power can masquerade as love.” The release further noted that the track is "haunting, satirical" and showcases Martinez’s unique style that blends charm, mischief, and bite.
The lyrics of "POSSESSION" confront themes of abusive relationships, with a striking chorus that includes: “Baby, I’m your possession, handle me like a weapon/ Gaslight me right, tell me, ‘Keep quiet’/ I’ll go along, di-di-dum/ Put me up like a prize, I’ll be a good housewife/ You won’t see me cry when women come by.”
"POSSESSION" is not only a standalone release but also serves as the first preview of Martinez’s upcoming LP, following her 2023 album Portals. That album enjoyed considerable success, spending two weeks at No. 1 on the Top Rock & Alternative Albums chart and securing the No. 2 position on the all-genre Billboard 200.
Looking ahead, 2024 promises to be a busy year for Martinez as she prepares for "The Trilogy Tour" and a performance at Lollapalooza.
Trailing behind "POSSESSION" in the music poll were Springsteen’s "Streets of Minneapolis," which garnered 8% of the votes, Cannons’ "Starlight" with 6%, and Noah Kahan’s "The Great Divide" with 3%.
