Megan Grant Sets New NCAA Home-Run Record as Bruins Compete in Big Ten Title Game
UCLA’s Megan Grant Sets NCAA Home Run Record Amidst Title Game Loss
UCLA senior Megan Grant made history on Saturday by hitting her 38th home run of the season, setting a new NCAA Division I record during a Big Ten tournament title game against Nebraska. This remarkable achievement breaks the previous record of 37 home runs, established in 1995 by Arizona’s Lauren Espinoza.
The record-breaking homer, which came in the third inning off Big Ten Pitcher of the Year Jordy Frahm, initially gave UCLA a 2-0 advantage. However, the Bruins’ offense struggled for the remainder of the game, ultimately falling to Nebraska with a score of 7-2. With this performance, UCLA increased its single-season team home run total to an NCAA record of 182.
As the Bruins await their NCAA tournament matchup, set to be revealed at 4 p.m. Sunday on ESPN2, they are expected to host both an NCAA Regional and Super Regional if they advance.
Grant is also in a tight race for the NCAA home run title with Oklahoma freshman Kendall Wells, who has hit 36 home runs this season. Although Wells’ team was eliminated from the Southeastern Conference tournament, she will have the opportunity to add to her tally during the NCAA tournament.
This season has solidified Grant’s legacy in collegiate softball, and her record-breaking achievement adds to the excitement of the approaching postseason.
