The film Song Sung Blue brings to the big screen the true love story of husband and wife Neil Diamond tribute act, Lightning & Thunder. Starring Kate Hudson and Hugh Jackman as Claire and Mike Sardina, this musical drama chronicles the couple’s near two-decade journey as performers.
Released on December 25, 2025, the movie draws inspiration from the 2008 documentary Song Sung Blue by Greg Kohs, which captured the lives of the Milwaukee-based band. It emphasizes their early days in the spotlight and explores the dynamics of their relationship amid rising fame.
Leading up to the film’s release, Jackman has consistently lauded Hudson’s performance. At the Gotham Awards’ 35th annual ceremony in December 2025, he proclaimed that her work in Song Sung Blue is "Oscar-worthy."
"Kate Hudson is not only one of the great stars of our business, she is a consummate actor," Jackman declared, emphasizing his belief that she will secure an Oscar this time.
For her part, Hudson expressed excitement about the buzz surrounding potential awards. "Honestly, it’s really just exciting. It’s very exciting and that’s it," she said in November 2025. She acknowledged unpredictability in the industry, commenting, “You never know with these things. I’ve been around now long enough to know just to enjoy that people are really loving the movie.”
With Song Sung Blue now in theaters, audiences can witness the cast alongside their real-life inspirations.

Jackman takes on the role of Mike “Lightning” Sardina, a Neil Diamond impersonator and one half of the musical duo Lightning & Thunder. The couple performed together for over 17 years and were married for 12 before Mike’s untimely death in July 2006.
While Jackman is known for his musical talents, he mentioned in a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times that he had to "lose Hugh Jackman to be Mike." He elaborated, “How does Mike find himself within his love of Neil? It took me a second to find him and lose my shtick, because I’m a performer too.”
Jackman, who had not sung publicly before college auditions, also related to Mike’s journey, saying, “His dream was always huge but this was not how he thought it was going to go. It was that ‘one plus one equals three’ thing where, all of a sudden, they found themselves being the next big thing.”

Known for her roles in romantic comedies, Hudson said she felt no intimidation in stepping into Claire’s shoes. "When you grow up with storytellers, you forget the camera’s there," she explained to the Los Angeles Times.
“You’re not thinking about anything glamorous,” Hudson remarked. “You’re looking at the role and what it needs. It’s what you long for as a performer. It allows you to almost leave your body.”
Hudson emphasized the importance of authenticity in her portrayal, stating, “You want to make a choice in a film because it’s the right choice for the character, not because you’re trying to mimic something.”
