Marlon Wayans Praises James Van Der Beek for His Fun Cameo in ‘Scary Movie’: “A Truly Special Moment”
As Hollywood reflects on the passing of James Van Der Beek, Marlon Wayans has shared memories of the late actor’s cameo in the 2000 film Scary Movie. Wayans, who co-created the franchise, revisits his experience with Van Der Beek as he prepares for the June 5 premiere of Scary Movie 6.
Wayans expressed his admiration for Van Der Beek, stating, “He was cool as hell for even doing it,” referring to the actor’s brief appearance as his iconic character from Dawson’s Creek.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Wayans recalled, “He was huge on Dawson’s Creek. He was like, ‘Oh, I’m game,’ and I was like, ‘bet.’”
The scene in question parodied Scream (1996), depicting Cindy Campbell, played by Anna Faris, as she shares an intimate moment with her boyfriend, only to be interrupted by the theme song from Dawson’s Creek, leading a bewildered Dawson to her window.
Wayans reminisced, “It was quick, but the audience loved it. ‘Oh! Wrong, wrong, wrong set!’ And he just leaves. It was just the coolest moment.”
Van Der Beek portrayed the titular character in Dawson’s Creek throughout its six-season run from 1998 to 2003, which significantly propelled his acting career.
Last month, Van Der Beek’s wife, Kimberly, announced his death at the age of 48 following his battle with colorectal cancer. In a heartfelt message shared on Instagram, the family stated, “Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed peacefully this morning. He met his final days with courage, faith, and grace. There is much to share regarding his wishes, love for humanity and the sacredness of time. Those days will come. For now we ask for peaceful privacy as we grieve our loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend.”
