Mark Vientos Leads Mets to Series Victory with Two Home Runs Against Angels
Mets Defeat Angels 5-1 with Strong Performances from Vientos and Holmes
In a decisive matchup on Sunday, the New York Mets secured a 5-1 victory over the Los Angeles Angels. Mark Vientos shone with two home runs and four RBIs, while right-hander Clay Holmes delivered a solid performance, allowing just one run over 6⅔ innings.
Holmes (4-2) confounded Angels hitters, surrendering four hits alongside three walks and striking out six. This win marked the Mets’ first series victory since April 7, having narrowly won two of three games against the Minnesota Twins earlier in April.
The Mets were forced to shuffle their lineup as Bo Bichette took over at shortstop following an injury to Ronny Mauricio, who fractured his left thumb and was placed on the injured list. Shortstop Francisco Lindor is also sidelined with a calf strain.
The Angels started strong, taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Zach Neto and Mike Trout earned walks, allowing Jorge Soler to drive in a run with a single. However, as Holmes settled into the game, the Mets turned the tide, with Vientos launching a towering two-run homer in the fourth inning that traveled 427 feet into the center field rock pile.
The contest remained competitive until the eighth inning, when Mets’ Carson Benge delivered an RBI double, expanding the lead to 3-1. Vientos followed up with another two-run shot, this time to left field.
Both teams displayed defensive prowess, highlighted by a diving catch from the Mets’ MJ Melendez in the sixth inning and another spectacular play by Benge in the ninth.
Looking ahead, the Angels will turn to right-hander Jose Soriano (5-1, 0.84 ERA) as they open a new series against the Chicago White Sox on Monday, facing off against RHP Davis Martin (4-1, 1.95 ERA).
