Marcus Discusses Earnings and Future Plans; CEO Excited About Family-Friendly Films for Midwest Audiences
Marcus Theatres Reports Q4 Revenue Increase Amid Competitive Landscape
Milwaukee-based Marcus Theatres, the nation’s fourth-largest cinema chain, reported a revenue boost of 2.25%, bringing earnings to $123.8 million, attributed to a favorable film mix.
Net income surged to $7.7 million, up from $3.3 million, despite accounting for $5.2 million in noncash charges. Adjusted EBITDA increased by 1.9% to $24 million, with the chain outperforming the industry by 7.6 percentage points in the fourth quarter, according to Comscore data.
Following the announcement, shares climbed over 4%, reflecting positive analyst sentiment. However, during the subsequent Q&A session, CEO Greg Marcus chose not to engage directly with ongoing discussions around Warner Bros. Discovery or his preferred suitor between Paramount and Netflix. This comes amidst criticism from the trade group Cinema United toward Netflix, which has been lobbying for a stronger theatrical window. Interestingly, AMC Entertainment CEO Adam Aron recently praised the streaming giant.
While attendance dipped by 5.7%, admission revenues rose by 6%, bolstered by a 12.7% increase in average ticket prices. The chain has been adjusting pricing strategies during periods of peak demand, and noted a rising percentage of sales from premium large format and 3D screenings. The quarter’s top films included Wicked: For Good, Zootopia 2, Avatar: Fire and Ash, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, and Black Phone 2.
Labor efficiency showed sequential improvement throughout the year, with the average ticket price increasing by 3.7% and average concession revenue per patron climbing by 4.1%. The leading films in 2025 are projected to include A Minecraft Movie, Wicked: For Good, Lilo & Stitch, Zootopia 2, and Superman.
Mark Gramz, President of Marcus Theatres, acknowledged standout films like Avatar: Fire and Ash, The Housemaid, and Marty Supreme for catering to diverse audiences. He expressed optimism for the current year, citing a strong lineup of franchise-heavy family films, such as Toy Story 5, Minions & Monsters, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, and the live-action adaptation of Moana. Action-adventure titles like Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Dune: Part Three, and Avengers: Doomsday will also appeal to audiences.
Gramz further highlighted Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, along with revivals of Scream 7 and The Devil Wears Prada 2, illustrating the chain’s commitment to providing a diverse programming slate.
Marcus Theatres aims to leverage its high concentration of luxury recliner seating and PLF screens, along with superior food and beverage options and consumer-friendly technology. The company is focused on enhancing audience engagement through a new dine-in app, expanded loyalty programs, a movie club, and initiatives like Mystery Tuesday.
The family-owned company, which also operates a chain of upscale hotels, recognizes that theaters represent a crucial segment of its overall business.
