Man Kills Ex-Girlfriend in Tustin and Then Runs to Mexico, According to Police
Suspect Arrested Following Fatal Shooting in Tustin
A man who fled to Mexico after allegedly shooting and killing his ex-girlfriend in Tustin earlier this week has been apprehended, according to local authorities.
The incident took place Thursday at the intersection of Medford Avenue and Yorba Street, where police say 47-year-old Juan Marquez, a resident of Hawthorne, ambushed his ex-girlfriend, 42-year-old Sandra Fernandez, near her workplace. Tragically, Fernandez succumbed to her injuries at the scene.
After the shooting, Marquez fled across the border through the San Ysidro Port of Entry. Tustin police detectives quickly identified him as the primary suspect and obtained an arrest warrant.
On Saturday, U.S. Customs and Border Protection detained Marquez as he attempted to re-enter the United States at the border checkpoint. He has since been booked into the Orange County Jail and faces charges of murder. Currently, he is being held without bail.
Authorities have not disclosed a possible motive for the shooting.
