Macaulay Culkin Reflects on His Acting Hiatus
Macaulay Culkin is shedding light on his decision to step back from acting during his teenage years. The former child star, now 45, revealed that his hiatus began at the age of 14 after the success of films like Richie Rich and Home Alone.
In a recent appearance on the YouTube show Mythical Kitchen, Culkin explained that he sought a more ordinary life away from the limelight. "What I wanted is to be with people my own age," he shared. He noted that many of his early roles involved solo performances rather than ensemble casts, which contributed to his feeling of isolation.
Culkin drew a comparison between his experience in Home Alone and the film Castaway, saying, “You’ll watch Home Alone… and I go, ‘Oh my gosh, I’m in Castaway, except he had a volleyball to talk to.’” He further elaborated, addressing questions about his on-screen collaborations by suggesting that his interactions, especially with Joe Pesci, were limited, as he often found himself “in a house, by myself, almost home alone.”
The actor emphasized his desire for a normal teenage experience. “I wanted to go out and date girls, hang out with people my own age. I wanted to go to a party,” he remarked with a laugh, recalling, “I can’t tell you how many Bar Mitzvahs I missed.”
Reflecting on fame, Culkin remarked, “You can’t un-ring that bell, you can’t put the toothpaste back in the bell.” He described his career trajectory as something that found him rather than something he actively pursued. “I didn’t really do a lot of tugging on my parent’s sleeve, saying, ‘Mummy, daddy, I want to be famous.’ I kind of just started doing it and I was good at it,” he said.
Culkin’s journey into acting began because his father aimed to take his older siblings for headshots. “My mom just wanted a break and was like, ‘Take Mac with you,’” he recalled. His first audition led to a series of bookings that accelerated his early career.
