Diego Luna Cast in Disney’s Live-Action Adaptation of ‘Tangled’
Character details for the live-action adaptation of Tangled have not been disclosed, but the cast has been confirmed. Teagan Croft and Milo Manheim will portray Rapunzel and Flynn Rider, respectively. Kathryn Hahn is set to take on the role of the villainous Mother Gothel.
While plot details remain scarce, Michael Gracey, known for his work on The Greatest Showman, will direct the film, scheduled for release in 2024. He will work from a screenplay by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson and Michael Montemayor. Kristin Burr will produce for Burr! Productions, with Lucy Kitada serving as executive producer. Jessica Virtue, Executive Vice President of Production, is overseeing the project for Disney Live Action, with filming set to begin in Spain this June.
The original Tangled, released in 2010, was directed by Nathan Greno and Byron Howard and is a modern retelling of the Brothers Grimm fairy tale Rapunzel. The story follows Rapunzel, a spirited princess with magical golden hair, as she escapes her secluded tower and embarks on an adventure with a charming thief. In her journey, she uncovers her true identity and the perilous reality surrounding the woman who held her captive. The film was a major success, grossing over $590 million worldwide, earning an Oscar nomination for the original song “I See the Light,” and revitalizing Disney’s princess genre for a new audience. The music was composed by Alan Menken, with lyrics by Glenn Slater.
Luna, a two-time Emmy and three-time Golden Globe nominee, recently made his directorial debut with Ashes (Ceniza en la boca), based on a renowned Spanish-language novel, which is set to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on May 13. His upcoming projects include the Netflix film México 86, slated for release on June 5, and the hostage crisis thriller Eleven Days, directed by Peter Landesman.
THR was the first to report on his casting in Tangled.
