- Both Lukas and Willie are contenders in the Best Traditional Country Album category.
- “That makes Dad real proud, and that makes me real happy,” Lukas stated.
The Grammy nominations this year have sparked excitement in the Nelson family, especially as Lukas Nelson finds himself nominated in the same category as his legendary father, Willie Nelson. Their nominations in the Best Traditional Country Album category highlight a unique familial connection rather than rivalry.
“There’s no rivalry at all. Me and him joined teams, so we got a 40 percent chance,” Lukas remarked about their nominations. “A win for anyone in that group [is a win for me].”
This year marks the introduction of the Best Traditional Country Album category at the 2026 Grammys. Lukas, 36, received his nomination for his debut solo album, American Romance, released in June, while 92-year-old Willie is nominated for Oh What a Beautiful World. Further showcasing the family’s talent, Lukas’s brother Micah, 35, also received a nod for producing their father’s album, Last Leaf on the Tree, nominated for Best Americana Album.
“To be on the bill with Dad is such a special thing,” Lukas remarked. “All three of us… I think that makes Dad real proud, and that makes me real happy.”

Lukas, the second-youngest of Willie’s eight children, has built his career alongside other artists. He often performs with his father, most recently at Farm Aid in September, and he has also released music with his band, Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real. Lukas gained prior recognition at the Grammys, earning an award in 2020 for his work on the soundtrack for A Star Is Born.
This Grammy nomination, however, holds a unique significance for him. “It feels like my own. This is the first time that I’ve done something on my own that got that recognition by my peers, and I’m pretty grateful for that,” he explained.
His music, characterized by a traditional sound, contrasts with the trend of contemporary country songs. Lukas reflects on his artistic identity, stating, “I mean, I was just writing a love letter to my country with this album, to the country that raised me.” He acknowledges the evolving nature of country music and expresses gratitude for the recognitions his work has received.

Reflecting on his earlier career, Lukas acknowledges significant growth stemming from his experiences, particularly his collaboration on A Star Is Born, where he co-produced the soundtrack. He values the opportunity to create music for others, a skill he admires in his father.
“I learned about creating music for someone else to sing, which I really love doing,” he stated. “I enjoy the idea of writing a song that gets interpreted by other people in a different way.”
Once aspiring to a career as an Olympic swimmer, Lukas chose to focus on music, a passion that early on manifested in songwriting. At age 11, he penned “You Were It,” later recorded by his father for a 2004 album. Now, his rendition concludes his album American Romance.

“I was kind of an awkward kid. I wondered who I was in the context of being the son of someone famous,” he reflected. “Music gave me an avenue to put all my pain into and transform it like alchemy into something beautiful. It really did save my life. It kept me from going down dark paths, and it’s given me a sense of meaning and purpose and confidence.”
As the Grammys approach, Lukas is already looking ahead, with new songs inspired by his personal experiences. “I write about things that happen to me or I write about things I imagine happening to me. It’s a gift, the ability to take your pain and turn it into something beautiful,” he said.
