Luka Doncic’s Injury Clouds Lakers’ Victory Against the 76ers
The Los Angeles Lakers faced a challenging situation Thursday night as star guard Luka Doncic was sidelined for the second half due to left leg soreness. The team announced the injury during the third quarter of their game against the Philadelphia 76ers.
Doncic exited the contest in the second quarter of the Lakers’ 119-115 victory at Crypto.com Arena. The Lakers, undeterred by a 14-point deficit, rallied behind standout performances from Austin Reaves, LeBron James, and Rui Hachimura, coupled with a strong defensive effort led by Marcus Smart and Jared Vanderbilt.
Reaves, playing in only his second game after recovering from a left calf strain, scored an impressive 35 points, including 13 in the fourth quarter. His critical back-to-back three-pointers and two free throws early in the fourth quarter gave the Lakers a six-point lead that they would maintain. Later in the quarter, Reaves extended the lead to 13 points with another three-pointer, which peaked at 16 points as the game drew to a close.
James contributed a double-double with 17 points and 10 assists, while Hachimura, who stepped in for Doncic at the start of the third quarter, added 14 points off the bench, including a crucial basket with 12.3 seconds remaining. His poised play was instrumental as the Lakers weathered a late surge from the 76ers.
Doncic’s injury occurred with just under four minutes left in the second quarter when he attempted a pass to Maxi Kleber, resulting in a turnover. As he transitioned back up the court, Doncic grabbed the back of his left leg and later appeared to be in pain while moving up and down the floor. Lakers coach J.J. Redick called a timeout shortly thereafter, allowing Doncic to walk gingerly to the bench before heading to the locker room. He finished the first half with 10 points, four rebounds, and two assists.
Entering the game, Doncic was leading the NBA in scoring, averaging 33.4 points per game, along with an average of 8.7 assists.
The Lakers recently completed a demanding stretch of 16 days on the road, playing eight games, with their last outing in New York against the Nets just prior to this matchup with the 76ers, who were riding a five-game win streak. Redick expressed hopes that his team had rested adequately before the game.
Reaves, who had previously missed 19 games due to a left hamstring strain, displayed resilience in his return.
In another development, the Lakers officially announced during the third quarter that they had acquired shooting guard Luke Kennard from the Atlanta Hawks in exchange for Gabe Vincent and a second-round draft pick in 2032. Kennard has been noted for his exceptional shooting ability, converting 49.7% from three-point range this season, and is expected to provide additional spacing on the court for Doncic, James, and Reaves. He is averaging 7.9 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 2.1 assists this season, shooting an impressive 53.8% from the field.
As the season progresses, the implications of Doncic’s injury and Kennard’s acquisition will be pivotal for the Lakers as they navigate the challenges ahead.
