Local Man Steps In to Help Neighbors During a Break-In Incident in San Fernando Valley
Home Invasion in Toluca Lake Ends with Neighbor Attacked by Bear Spray
LOS ANGELES — A home invasion in Toluca Lake was captured on surveillance video, revealing a sudden attack on a neighbor who tried to confront the suspects. The incident has sparked frustration among local residents, who are increasingly concerned about a recent uptick in burglaries.
Steve Calabro, a resident who intervened during the break-in, described his experience. He received a text at 12:04 AM from a neighbor reporting that a robbery was underway. Responding quickly, Calabro learned that his neighbors had noticed the burglary through their security cameras.
The video footage shows two suspects inside the house, moments before one of them approached Calabro while he documented the scene. "They panicked once they knew I was there because they had radios," he explained. As he prepared to take pictures of the suspects and their getaway vehicle, one of them confronted him with a canister of bear spray, attacking Calabro directly. "He pulled the bear spray and sprayed me in the face, but I kept on taking pictures," Calabro recounted.
This incident reflects a broader trend of increasing criminal activity in the Valley, with reports of similar attacks becoming more frequent. Just last week, a West Hills family experienced a vehicle theft captured on home surveillance, while another home in Woodland Hills was burglarized with children present.
Calabro emphasized the importance of local communication in combating crime. "Talk to your neighbors, be aware of what’s going on," he advised, suggesting that their collaboration played a key role in disrupting the burglary. He noted that had his neighbor not contacted him, the situation could have been far worse.
Community concerns are mounting, as residents report that this is not the first time homes in the area have been targeted. The LAPD has been contacted for updates regarding the investigation and the suspects involved, but no official response has been released at this time.
