In the final moments of Emily in Paris season 5, Emily Cooper faces a significant crossroads: should she remain in Italy with her charismatic boyfriend, or return to the vibrant life she has established in Paris? Ultimately, Emily’s choice to step away from both a promising job opportunity and her relationship with Marcello reflects her commitment to personal growth.
“I loved it,” said Lily Collins, who portrays Emily, during a conversation aboard the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express on December 13. “I feel like each person Emily’s with teaches her so much about what she needs and doesn’t need, what she wants and doesn’t want, which I think is very realistic in our own lives.”
The season finale depicts Emily and Marcello Muratori, played by Eugenio Franceschini, enjoying a romantic getaway in Venice, where Marcello is set to debut his clothing line at fashion week. However, their intimate moments are interrupted when his mother announces that she will pass control of their family’s luxury cashmere business to him, presenting Emily with the chance to lead the brand’s marketing—a role that would require relocating to Solitano, a quaint town near Rome.
“I think that there was this kind of fairytale dream that came with Marcello,” Collins explained. “And [Emily] really appreciates, respects, and loves him as a human. But I think she acknowledged that it wasn’t the life she wanted and she wasn’t done exploring herself yet. It wasn’t that it would have been a bad life; it just wouldn’t have been fulfilling for her at this moment. I really liked that she was brave enough to make that decision.”
Co-star Ashley Park noted the maturity displayed by the characters in this decision. “Emily’s always giving, giving, giving. When is there a partner for her that can reciprocate that support?” Park reflected.
Following the breakup, Collins expressed her satisfaction that Emily returned to Paris rejuvenated and determined. “We don’t leave the season with [Emily] broken,” Collins remarked. “She walks in in this red suit and she’s like, ‘I’m good. I am good.’ I want to leave her okay, having gone through her experiences but feeling strong and not a mess.”
As season 6 remains uncertain, Collins shared her enthusiasm for potential future settings, especially after Gabriel, played by Lucas Bravo, sends Emily a postcard inviting her to Greece. “Yeah. Why not? Hello!” Collins exclaimed. She added, “Look, we don’t know if we’re going to a sixth, but I would love to go to Greece.”
Emily in Paris season 5 is currently available for streaming on Netflix.
