Leonardo DiCaprio, Sean Penn, and Benicio Del Toro Honored with Hammond Cinema Vanguard Award at Santa Barbara Film Festival
Pete Hammond is set to moderate a tribute honoring prominent actors Leonardo DiCaprio, Sean Penn, and Benicio del Toro. The event recognizes their impactful contributions to the critically acclaimed film One Battle After Another, which also stars Regina Hall, Teyana Taylor, and Chase Infiniti. DiCaprio, Penn, and del Toro’s performances as Bob, Col. Steven J. Lockjaw, and Sensei Sergio St. Carlos, respectively, have propelled the film into this awards season’s spotlight. One Battle After Another is the leading contender at the Golden Globes with nine nominations, including individual nods for the three lead actors, and has recently secured three Critics Choice Awards including Best Picture. In addition, it was named Best Picture of the Year by various prestigious groups, including the Gotham Awards and the Los Angeles Film Critics Association.
“This is by far the most exciting tribute in SBIFF history,” said festival director Roger Durling. “These three artists individually have regaled us with exemplary and unforgettable performances, and together, they have made one of the best films, One Battle After Another. Let’s rejoice.”

Produced by Warner Bros. Pictures, One Battle After Another tells the story of Bob (DiCaprio), a faded revolutionary navigating life amid paranoia while living off the grid with his resourceful daughter, Willa (Infiniti). The narrative intensifies when Bob’s long-time nemesis (Penn) returns after a 16-year absence, coinciding with Willa’s sudden disappearance, forcing Bob to confront his tumultuous past.
DiCaprio, an Oscar-winning actor with over three decades in the industry, has garnered seven Academy Award nominations and numerous accolades, including the Best Actor award for The Revenant. His extensive filmography features standout performances in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, The Great Gatsby, and collaborations with director Martin Scorsese.
Penn is a two-time Oscar winner recognized for his roles in Mystic River and Milk. With a career spanning over 40 years, he has been celebrated at numerous film festivals and has directed acclaimed films such as Into the Wild. He founded CORE in 2010, an organization providing disaster relief globally.
Del Toro, also an Oscar winner, is celebrated for his performances in films like Traffic and Che, and has received critical acclaim through a diverse range of roles, including work in Sicario and Star Wars: The Last Jedi. His recent projects include Reptile on Netflix.
The Cinema Vanguard Award acknowledges actors who have made significant contributions to cinema by stepping outside conventional boundaries. Previous recipients include renowned talents such as Amy Adams, Colin Farrell, and Martin Scorsese.
The 41st Santa Barbara International Film Festival is scheduled for February 4-14.
