Leonardo DiCaprio Reflects on His 8th Oscar Nomination, Props, Viral Moments, and the Journey of Studio Risk-Taking
Leonardo DiCaprio Achieves Eighth Oscar Nomination for ‘One Battle After Another’
Leonardo DiCaprio earned his eighth Oscar nomination on Thursday for his performance in One Battle After Another, solidifying his status as one of the most accomplished actors in cinematic history. This recognition positions him alongside eight other actors who have received at least seven nominations, a prestigious group that includes legends such as Ingrid Bergman, Jeff Bridges, and Kate Winslet, his co-star in Titanic.
DiCaprio’s six nominations for Best Actor tie him with Richard Burton and Daniel Day-Lewis for the most in this category. Having previously taken home the Oscar for The Revenant, this latest nomination highlights his consistent excellence in the industry.
While Warner Bros. leaders Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy faced substantial risks with One Battle After Another and another project titled Sinners, their decisions now appear astute. The films collectively garnered 29 nominations during an awards season increasingly dominated by specialty labels instead of major studios.
One Battle After Another has maintained a positive trajectory since its theatrical release, transitioning to streaming at an ideal time to build momentum. DiCaprio remarked on the film’s potential for repeat viewings, noting that audiences can appreciate various performances and dialogue with each viewing.
The competition this year is fierce, with only five nominations in most categories, excluding Best Picture. Alongside DiCaprio, notable actors such as Benicio Del Toro and Sean Penn have received nominations, while newcomer Chase Infiniti, praised by DiCaprio as the "heart and soul" of the film, was notably absent from the list.
“Chase was the heart and soul of this movie,” DiCaprio stated, expressing pride in her performance. “She really carried this film, especially it being her first role in a feature film. I couldn’t have been more proud of her and the integrity and intensity she brought to that character.”
Reflecting on the film’s themes, DiCaprio commented, "To work on this film with Paul and just to collaborate on a film that just feels so topical, man, it’s unbelievable." He emphasized the satisfaction of being involved in a project that he believes is significant.
DiCaprio also humorously speculated that the Academy Museum might soon request notable props from the film, such as the bathrobe worn by his character, Bob Ferguson. He acknowledged that he does not keep such items, joking that it has become increasingly difficult to obtain props from studios.
“It’s gotten harder to get those props out of the studios, man. They go right into the vault,” he said. “I can’t think of anything I have that is that memorable.”
Regarding his recent viral moment at the Golden Globes, DiCaprio remained tight-lipped, stating only, “It was directed to a friend… as the lead character says in A Bronx Tale, I’m not a rat.”
